19 Secrets about Windows XP

You’ve read the reviews and digested the key feature enhancements and operational changes. Now it’s time to delve a bit deeper and uncover some of Windows XP

’s secrets.

1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous versions of Windows were coy about how long they went between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina. Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type ’systeminfo’. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep these, type ’systeminfo > info.txt’. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

2. You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Start menu, select Run… and type ‘gpedit.msc’; then select Userinterface and system options, but take care — some may stop your computer behaving as you wish. (Professional Edition only). Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it. Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many

3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter ‘rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation’ in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That’s it — just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that’s not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.

4. XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger

, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word ‘hide’ and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include ‘eventcreate’ and ‘eventtriggers’ for creating and watching system events, ‘typeperf’ for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and ’schtasks’ for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by /? will give a list of options — they’re all far too baroque to go into here.

6. XP has IP version 6 support — the next generation of IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type ‘ipv6 install’ into Run… (it’s OK, it won’t ruin your existing network setup) and then ‘ipv6 /?’ at the command line to find out more. If you don’t know what IPv6 is, don’t worry and don’t bother.

7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using ‘taskkill /pid’ and the task number, or just ‘tskill’ and the process number. Find that out by typing ‘tasklist’, which will also tell you a lot about what’s going on in your system.

8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice if you’ve got a fast machine. On slower machines, you can make XP leave zip files well alone by typing ‘regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll’ at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back as they were by typing ‘regsvr32 zipfldr.dll’.

9. XP has ClearType — Microsoft’s anti-aliasing font display technology — but doesn’t have it enabled by default. It’s well worth trying, especially if you were there for DOS and all those years of staring at a screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat. To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, select ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable the selection. Expect best results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login screen as well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Control Panel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.

10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friend who’s using network address translation (NAT) on a home network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit the file. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IP address, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with your chum’s real IP address — they can find this out by going to http://www.whatismyip.com — and get them to make sure that they’ve got port 3389 open on their firewall and forwarded to the errant computer.

11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As… and enter the user name and password you want to use. This only applies for that run. The trick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, which many require. Note that you can have some fun by running programs multiple times on the same system as different users, but this can have unforeseen effects.

12. Windows XP can be very insistent about you checking for auto updates, registering a Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, the nagging goes away, but if you feel you might slip the bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0.

13. You can start up without needing to enter a user name or password. Select Run… from the start menu and type ‘control userpasswords2′, which will open the user accounts application

. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use.

14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically delete temporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start the browser, select Tools / Internet Options… and Advanced, go down to the Security area and check the box to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.

15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, just in case you can’t see the LEDs twinkle on your network card. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then select Properties. Right click on the description for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area when connected box. You’ll now see a tiny network icon on the right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during network traffic.

16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things along by changing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0.

17. You can rename loads of files at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you can arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View, Arrange Icon By… Show In Groups.

18. Windows Media Player will display the cover art for albums as it plays the tracks — if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks from the CD. If it didn’t, or if you have lots of pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the cover art in the same directory as the tracks. Just call it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pick it up and display it.

19. Windows key + Break brings up the System Properties dialogue box; Windows key + D brings up the desktop; Windows key + Tab moves through the taskbar buttons.

log trick !! make ur Notepad a diary !!

Sometimes we want to insert current data and time, whenever we open the file in the notepad. If you are a lazy person like me, who don’t like to press F5 whenever you open a notepad. Then here is a trick to avoid this. Just add a .LOG in the first line of your text file and close it. Whenever you open the file with that text in the first line in the notepad, it will insert the current date and time at the end of the file. You can start entering your text after that.

WHY?

The reason this happens:

In notepad, any other 4-3-3-5 letter word combo will have the same results. It is all to do with a limitation in Windows. Text files containing Unicode UTF-16-encoded Unicode are supposed to start with a "Byte-Order Mark" (BOM), which is a two-byte flag that tells a reader how the following UTF-16 data is encoded.

1) You are saving to 8-bit Extended ASCII (Look at the Save As / Encoding format)
2) You are reading from 16-bit UNICODE (You guessed it, look at the Save As / Encoding format)
This is why the 18 8-bit characters are being displayed as 9 (obviously not supported by your codepage) 16-bit UNICODE characters

Windows Group Policy (gpedit.msc)

Group Policies is a powerful area in windows base system where you can control what users can do and cannot do. Unfortunately in windows XP you have a slight problem as all these group policies will apply to the Administrator account as well. Reason behind this is Windows XP dose not support domain users like windows Server versions. Still you can use gpedit.msc or Group Policies to define limitations for users.

How to get control over Group Policies?

Method 1: (Click) Start > (Click) run > (type) gpedit.msc > (Press) Enter
Method 2: (Windows Drive normally it is C) C:\WINDOWS\system32 and you will able to find the gpedit.msc file and double click it.

(Hint) Copy a short cut of gpedit.msc file to your desktop. This will come handy when you play with gpedit.msc file. I will let you know later.

After you open the gpedit.msc windows open go to user configuration and then to Administrative Template folder.

In this I will show you some useful group policy settings you can start with.

Restrict Windows Messenger.

If you do not want your users to use Windows Messenger and you want to block it this is a effective way to do it.

Administrative Templates
Ø
(Select) Windows Component
Ø
(Select) Windows Messenger
Ø
(Double click) Do not allow windows Messenger to be run
Ø
(Select) Enable
Ø
(Click) Apply
Ø
(Double click ) Do not automatically start Windows Messenger initially
Ø
(Select) Enable
Ø
(Click) Apply

(Hint) Group policies are defined in English. Therefore you can explore through Administrator Template folder and find many useful things you can do to protect your shared computer by enabling the limitations.

These gpedit tricks will come handy if you want to control IE settings.

You can find the gpedit setting in the following location

Administrative Templates
>Windows Component
>>Internet Explorer

Some Interesting Settings

Enable Disable changing home page settings will disable uses changing the home page. First change the Internet Explorer Home page to what you want and enable this.

Enable Disable changing of Auto-Proxy scripts

Enable Disable changing Advanced Page Settings will add more security

Enable Disable changing proxy settings will stop users changing the proxy Settings from IE.

Administrative Templates
>Windows Component
>>Internet Explorer
>>> Toolbars

Disable customizing browser toolbar buttons & Disable customizing browser toolbar will stop users adding or deleting any toolbar buttons or doing any changes to the toolbar.

Administrative Templates
>Windows Component
>>Internet Explorer
>>> Internet Control Panel

Disable the Security page
Disable the Content page
Disable the Connection page
Disable the Programs page
Disable the Privacy page
Disable the Advanced page

These setting will come handy if you want to block someone being changing the Security setting, Privacy Setting and Advance settings for Internet Explorere.

In Windows XP operating system if you change any Windows group policy setting it just apply it to Administrator account as well. Especially if you restrict some access to hard drive partition or Run Command it restrict for Administrator as well. That depends on the setting you apply is a user account policy or machine policy. Normally Machine policy will apply to all the users. You can control user account policies base on users. However, Windows XP dose not support domain users like Windows server versions so even user account policies will apply to all the users.

I am using a simple trick to solve this issue. Not 100% but it makes life easier. In the beginning I just mention to copy a shortcut of gpedit.msc to the desktop. Reason behind that is when you play with Windows group Policies it is very easy to hide or prevent access to your hard drives. You will notice it after you restart your machine. Now you do not have access to gpedi.msc. You might have prevent access to “Run” as well.

Trick 1: If you done something like above situation you can simply solve it by creating a shortcut manually.

Right click on the desktop and go to “new” and select “shortcut”. It will ask you to give a path. If you have prevent access to your hard drive then you will not able to select the path so just select some other target like Desktop and click “Finish”.

Right click on the shortcut that you created and select properties and fill the details for gpedit.msc

Default Values
Target: C:\WINDOWS\system32\gpedit.msc
Start in: C:\WINDOWS\system32\

Click “Apply” and it will create a shortcut for gpedit.msc and now you will able to access gpedit.msc and change Group Policy

Trick 2: Use Trick 1 and before you disable any Program or Hard Drive you can create a short cut in Desktop. It will allow you to access these programs while other uses do not have any access.

Example: Prevent Access to Computer Hard Drives

First create a short cut to the Drives you going to hide or prevent access.
Then open the gpedit.msc [Start > Run > (type) gpedit.msc > Enter]

In Group Policy > User Configuration > Administrative Template > Desktop > Enable the “Remove My Computer icon on the Desktop”

If you need specific driver to be hidden you can go to In Group Policy > User Configuration > Administrative Template > Windows Component > Windows Explorer > and select the specific drivers from “hide these specific drivers from My Computer”

If you prevent access for My Computer, shortcuts will not be working.

How to: Remove Braviax.exe manually.

I don’t trust all the free scanners I find when I Google “Remove Braviax.exe” or “Braviax.exe”. Most of them are another adware or spywae. Otherwise it will only scan your computer for free and ask money to remove them. Therefore I always trust couple of good antivirus and spyware programs like Norton (Not free but you can use the trial for 90 days) AVG (100% free and cool).

Then always there is a manual removal for each spy ware, virus or antivirus. You need go back and remove the registry and couple of files and folders from your computer.

Braviax.exe is another Trojan horse that can affect any version of windows (Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows Vista, Windows NT, Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000).

If your computer is infected with Bravia.exe it will pop up windows warning style message saying

“Your computer is infected!
Windows has detected spyware infection! It is recomended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you.Click here to protect your computer from spyware!”

Removal Instructions

Update your antivirus program and do a full scan. If you don’t have any you can download AVG Antivirus and spy ware removal for free.

Then clean every threat found by your antivirus and get ready for a manual removal.

Go to windows file search and do a search for “Braviax” and do a full search and delete all the files you find. Braviax.exe in windows\system32 folder and figaro.sys are few of common file I found

Then go to registry edit (start> run> type “regedit” > enter) and do search (ctrl + f or go to “Edit” and the select Find) then search for “braviax” delete all the registry key found under that name. (Take a backup in any case if something goes wrong but remembers it is infected)

This is one of the common records in registry you can navigate to this location and remove it. However I have found couple of extra records in the registry when I have couple of users in my computer and if those accounts are infected. I think search for braviax and delete record is more effective.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\"braviax" = "%System%\braviax.exe"

Restart your computer and everything should be fine.

Web cam hack - Google web cam hack

How cool will it be to hack someone else web cam without them knowing. It is pretty scary though knowing that someone can hack your web cam and see what you do in front of the computer.

I have seen many videos in Youtube and Metacafe but still I could not figure out software, tool or a method to hack a web cam. But I know it is not impossible.

For example if you view other persons webcam you just have to get his or her permission. That is totally controlled by Microsoft Messenger. Logically if you know the IP and if there is a web cam connect to that computer you should be able to view it.

There are many other possibilities to view IP cameras. By default most of the known IP camera software allow web access to the cameras that enables you to access from anywhere around the world. Normally it will not give any password protection at all. Unfortunately or fortunately Google and other major Search engines will index it as they are not been told to skip these pages. So everyone who knows the small trick can see indexed IP cameras around the world. You never know what you can find in these cameras.

You don’t want to be a hacker to hack web cams. Only thing you need to know is how to search “Google camera hack” in Google and get the video tutorials or step by step guides.
I think I should not put it here but I will give couple of examples.

Copy and Paste the italic words on Google. Search in Google there are lots more ways to get the indexed web cams.

Brimsoft cameras - intitle:"Biromsoft WebCam" -4.0 -serial -ask -crack -software -a -the -build -download -v4 -3.01 -numrange:1-10000

Supervisor cam - intitle:"supervisioncam protocol"

Netsnap cameras - intitle:"Live NetSnap Cam-Server feed"

WebcamXP - intitle:"powered by webcamXP" intitle:"ProBroadcast"

EvoCam - intitle:"EvoCam" inurl:"webcam.html"
there will be plenty of more here if search in Google.

However, still I need to figure out a way to hack a web cam without using Google. I know you want to hack your friends, girl friends or boy friends web cam. It will be more fun than hacking your friend’s msn, yahoo or Gmail account.
